What is light pollution?... «When light steals the stars»
When light is shone towards the sky and encounters particles present in the atmosphere, it is reflected back towards Earth, thus making tha background sky that much brighter.
This is causes by lightning that is: poorly designed, poorly used and used abusively.
It jeopardizes: star watching, astronomy research and the balance of our ecosystems.
...not to mention a huge waste of energy!
Light pollution has more than doubled in the past 20 years at Mont-Mégantic Observatory. To ensure that we are able to continue our astronomy-related research activities, education and tourism, ASTROLab has launched and anti-light pollution campaign for the Mont-Mégantic region.
By increasing awareness, through regulations and public and private light conversation, and in conjunction with the du Granit, Haut-St-François and Sherbrooke MRC's, ASTROLab hopes to create one of the largest dark sky sanctuaries in the world!
Wise lighting includes...: - lighting that shines from top to bottom; - lighting one's own property and not one's neighbour's; - using the right amount of light; - using hight-pressure sodium light sources; - using motion detectors; - shutting off lights when they're not being used.
